The Gopher Tortoise
The gopher tortoise is native to the southeastern United States and we are lucky to have several of these magnificent reptiles in our park.
The gopher tortoise is a keystone species because it digs burrows that provide shelter for at least 360 other animal species. Unfortunately, due to Habitat degradation, the gopher tortoise is considered a threatened species; one reason why we are pleased to provide them with a protected habitat within our park
They are generally dark brown to gray-black in overall color, with a yellow bottom shell. Their front legs have scales to protect the tortoise while burrowing.
So when you’re out and about watch our for a gopher tortoise, but you’ll have to walk quietly as they can quickly scamper to their deep burrows, just in-case you’re a possible predator!
